Two local women have raised more than £1,600 for Macmillan Cancer Support after taking part in a 100km non-stop walking challenge.
Natalie Gowen and Vanessa Lucas, who work at Garston Veterinary Group’s Westbury practice, completed the 100km (62 mile) ‘London 2 Brighton Challenge’ in 24 hrs 49mins on Saturday 24th May.
Natalie said, “It was the toughest thing we have ever done. Conditions were the worst they have had for years and many people pulled out due to this, and injury.
“We have both had to train hard for this event and we are so proud of what we have both achieved. I completed it with blisters on the bottom of my feet and under a couple of toe nails. Both of us are very happy to have raised so much money for Macmillan.
“I am doing the challenge because I wanted to do something special to mark my 40th birthday and also because it has a strong family meaning to it. Both my granddad and my great-granddad worked for the London Stock Exchange and took part in this challenge. My great-granddad won it three times and my granddad won it twice!”
A spokesperson from the London 2 Brighton Challenge said, “A huge congratulations to all of our challengers who took in the London 2 Brighton Challenge, making it the biggest year ever. The weather resulted in some very tough and muddy conditions – but every single person who set off from the startline is an inspiration and we would like to congratulate you all.”
