CROWDS of local people made the trip to the White Horse last month to watch the lighting of the town’s beacon to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday.
Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Wiltshire, Lt Gen Sir Roderick Cordy-Simpson lit the beacon on Thursday 21st April at 7.30pm after reading a tribute to the Queen written by Prince Charles.
Sir Cordy-Simpson also congratulated the volunteers on a good job undertaken of cleaning the White Horse the weekend before.
Deputy Mayor of Westbury, councillor Stephen Andrews, represented the town council at the ceremony.
Cllr Andrews said, “I was very pleased with how well the ceremony went and that we had such a good turnout. Westbury joined over 1,000 beacons around the Commonwealth to mark Her Majesty’s 90th birthday.
“It was a pleasure to have Sir Cordy-Simpson to light the beacon, and I particularly enjoyed the impromptu singing of ‘Happy Birthday’ afterwards – it really captured the essence of the event.”
