POPPIES return to the window of Davies hardware shop in Edward Street as shopworker Lizzie Seymour wanted this year’s remembrance display to be bigger and better, with the hope of raising even more money for the poppy appeal.
With people asking about her window displays back in August Lizzie, who is now known for her creative displays around the town, wanted to do it bigger and better than last year.
Planning her design all year, the window features hand-knitted poppies, a 100-year-old Union Jack flag, hand-carved wooden items by Lizzie’s father, handmade bags and cushions with poppy emblems made from donated fabric and even creative poppies made from paper plates!
Lizzie told White Horse News, “I have raised nearly half of what I did last year already, people keep telling me how much they love the display – it’s lovely!
“I made the bags and cushions this year, all from donated fabric, so all of the money raised can go to the Poppy Appeal. If people would like one of the bags, they can make a donation for one. My friend in Yorkshire wanted one as soon as she saw it. Then later, she called to say her friend wanted one as well, so they’ve made it across the country. Also, a lady who works at Center Parcs has been taking my homemade poppy badges to sell, and she keeps coming back to get more, because everyone wants one.
“It’s lovely that Westbury gets so involved – not once did Gary and his wife [owners of Davies hardware shop in Edward Street] say they thought I was going over the top, they just left me to it. It will just be lovely to be able to say we raised more money this year than we did last year.”
