LOCAL cat welfare charity, Cats in Distress, is looking for donations in order to keep Frome’s felines firmly out of the vets and back tearing up carpets.
The Autumn Fair will be held at the Beckington Memorial Hall on October 2nd 11am- 4pm. This is an opportunity to grab the gifts you need for your little friend and donate to a good cause at the same time.
Over the last year, the charity has been quietly purring along. It has been celebrating milestone achievements, such as constructing five new rescue pens for its four-legged friends at the main centre in Frome, launching a brand-new site near Shepton Mallet and even reaching its 5th birthday.
Cats in Distress spoke to the White Horse about the everyday running of the charity, “The charity is run entirely by a team of trustees and volunteers and mainly operates in Frome, Bath, Bradford on Avon, Trowbridge, Westbury and Warminster.
“Covid has had a significant effect on the animal welfare sector, and with an unprecedented number of animals needing help, our team has been working with other rescues from as far away as Birmingham, Gloucester, Swindon & Northampton.
“Our policy to help any cat, if we have space, has meant they we have now helped in excess of 1,000 cats. We rescue, care for, and rehome cats & kittens, whether domestic, stray, injured, abandoned or feral, and currently have 65 cats & kittens in our care. All adopted cats & kittens are neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped, our vet fees this year are currently in excess of £26k and goes to reflect the number of animals in our care.”
One of the charity’s longer-term residents in Simon who has been laid up for six months after suffering a bad wound and fractured pelvis following a car accident. As a result, the little black and white trooper had to have light therapy treatment on his open wound.
