Co-op is bulldozed to make way for Lidl

THE OLD Co-op supermarket building which closed on 26th November 2016, has been demolished to make way for a new Lidl store, due to open later this year.

The demolition started on Tuesday 16th January and work including the building of a new car park is due to take around five weeks.

Three weeks into these works, Lidl will proceed with groundworks/substructure for the new store, then go on to complete the store itself with the steel framing, blockwork, roofing and cladding, finish the car park and fit out the store interior.

The scheduled completion for construction is August, with the new store opening in September.

Lidl said “The proposed Lidl foodstore will enhance Westbury’s existing facilities, services and employment opportunities, in line with Wiltshire Council’s strategy for market towns. The proposals will also involve the redevelopment of brownfield land, in line with the council’s strategy for economic regeneration within the area.

“The site is looking to provide employment opportunities, including up to 25 new jobs for local residents.”

Wiltshire Council granted planning permission for Lidl stating, “Wiltshire Council has worked proactively to secure this development to improve the economic, social and environmental conditions of the area”
