Young would-be organists aged between eight and 18 from around the region are being encouraged to take part in a ‘Pipes ‘n’ Pizza’ workshop at Edington Priory.
The event on Saturday 1st November, has been organised as the church continues to celebrate the recent installation of its new instrument. The free event is part of a recent initiative set up by the Diocese of Salisbury called ‘PipeUp!’ to inspire and create the next generation of organists.
The workshop begins at 11am and will be led by Richard Godfrey, a founder member of the scheme based in Lyme Regis, and local teacher and organist Chris Totney of Dauntsey’s School and St John’s Church, Devizes. Children who attend will be given a demonstration of the instrument, which was officially unveiled at this summer’s Edington Festival, and will also get the chance to have a go on it.
All abilities are welcome to sign up and no previous experience is necessary. The workshop will last around an hour and a half, after which participants will be rewarded with pizzas, before going home at 1pm. Following the event, it is hoped that anyone who wishes will be able to sign up for lessons on a weekly basis and, because the scheme is subsidised by the Tindall Trust, teachers are able to give lessons at a reduced cost of around £15 per hour.
