CHILDREN at Westbury Infant School were treated to a brand-new sensory garden thanks to a grant from Wessex Water.
The new interactive garden provides an outdoor learning space for students and had a grand opening at the start of October by the Mayor of Westbury, cllr Sheila Kimmins, and school council members.
The garden boasts tree stumps for children to sit on, raised flower borders full of seasonal plants for the senses of smell and touch, a rainbow glass art feature and a water feature that helps provide a tranquil space.
Headteacher Stacey Budge said, “After lots of hard work, the sensory garden at Westbury Infants was finally opened on a beautiful sunny afternoon by the Mayor of Westbury. The garden has been created in the space that had become overgrown and unused over the years.
“A wonderful memorial bench has been kindly donated by the family of a former pupil who loved the orchard area. The family of (one of our students, Oliver) said, ‘It’s such a lovely space for children to come and have some quiet time away from the classroom, to reflect and think’.”
Liz Channon, Year 2 teacher and one of the garden developers said, “We have tried to incorporate aspects that the children wanted to see in their sensory garden; they wanted wind chimes and a space to sit and learn. We also wanted to create a space that is accessible to everyone and that can be used as a peaceful sanctuary. We hope the wider community of Westbury can also benefit from the area.”
