MOTHER’S Day was celebrated a little differently by 300 people as they took to the Westbury White Horse in a fundraising walk in aid of local mum, Lisa Wells, who was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer last October.
Coachloads of ‘Lisa’s Army’ of supporters stepped out on Sunday 11th March, to either walk 7km or 20km to raise money for Lisa’s Army UK and for Dorothy House.
They were all armed with t-shirts and bracelets, that were used to raise funds prior to the walk. A company called clothes2order created printed t-shirts for Lisa’s Army to buy, raising a total of £3,549. Other fund raising events have included raffles, plastic bag sales and more, to add to the total.
White Horse News spoke to Lisa on the day of the walk who said, “It’s absolutely incredible to have this many people turn up today. I really didn’t think this little idea of mine would turn into something so crazy. There’s 300 people walking and the atmosphere is amazing, it’s really good.
“The support that I’m getting is overwhelming, we’ve even had donations from Canada. People from all over the world are getting on board, the support we are receiving is incredible.
“Our first target was £5,000 and we have absolutely smashed it. Every day I’m just getting constant emails saying that people have donated and it’s just so heartwarming, it’s amazing.
“I have said thank you so much and it feels like it doesn’t mean as much anymore but it really does, and I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone who supported me, thank you.”
Representatives from Dorothy House, Anne Montague and Steph Cox said, “Anything that can help raise money, and awareness for Dorothy House is fantastic. Predominately this is for Lisa’s Army and for her children as well, but it’s great to have the money coming in, hopefully for us to continue to do the work that we do.
“We need a lot of money to do what we do. People often think it is funded by the NHS, but for every £1 we get from the NHS, we have to raise another £4 – so events like this are absolutely vital. “
At the time of writing Lisa’s justgiving page had reached £46,987 supported by over 1,000 people.
