WESTBURY celebrated Halloween in style on Saturday 31st October with a diverse array of events around the town.
At the Co-op, staff held a Halloween fete in the morning, with witches, zombies, and other supernatural beings welcoming shoppers and manning the tills, while customers were invited to join in with Halloween activities.
“We’ve had a lot of things going on”, said store manager Simon Bush. “There’s apple bobbing, face painting, and cakes for sale. The staff have also donated money to come in fancy dress. It’s just a bit of fun, but it’s been really good.
“We’ve all dressed up before, and probably will again at Christmas. All the funds raised went towards Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID).”
Edington held its second annual pumpkin fair, and received double the number of entries as last year.
Pumpkin fair chair Liz Pike said, “There were lots of wonderfully decorated and carved pumpkins, we obviously have a lot a latent artistic talent in the village and the efforts will certainly brighten the lives of trick or treaters on Halloween. We did a lively trade for lunch with supporters tucking into soup, pumpkin of course, with pumpkin pie or pumpkin cake to follow. Children were kept busy with decorating pumpkin biscuits, painting card pumpkins, pumpkin hoopla and darts, plus lots more fun.”
On the high street, Banana Blues greeted customers with a larger-than-life robotic witch. “We’ve decorated the shop, had sweets for the children, and got in our own witch,” said owner Mike Cuthbert Murray. “We enjoy decorating the shop, and we always do it for occasions like Halloween and Christmas. It’s been fairly busy – it always is on Saturdays.”
As well as the various activities going on during the day, many of the pubs and bars around town entered the spirit of the occasion, encouraging staff and customers to dress up in ghoulish attire, an invitation that many people in the town accepted with relish.
