A mad hatter was spotted darting around the town as a new tea room opened in Edward Street on the 17th August.
Local couple Conrad and Julia Burrows have opened Mad Hatters Tea Rooms, and believe their emphasis on homemade, locally sourced food will help make their new business a real hit. The tea rooms serves breakfast, light lunches, daily specials, snacks, cakes and fancies alongside beverages, with items from all menus available at any time of the day, as well as a children’s menu to tempt the younger ones.
Julia said the opening of Mad Hatters fufills her dream to run a tea room. “Our ethos is that we’re trying to source locally and in season,” she explained. “Ladies from the Westbury Country Market make the cakes, we get our cheese from the Westbury Delicatessen, and our meat comes from Linhams in Maristow Street.”
“It’s all homemade food that’s affordable, and there’s nowhere that offers the nice decor we’ve got inside – we have done it up very, very nicely and it’s quite homely. Everyone’s feedback is that it’s lovely, and they particularly like the fact that there are not too many tables crammed in – we can get wheelchairs and buggies in.”
“We thought the idea of the Mad Hatter tea party was quite fun, and people relate to that. I also liked the old images from Lewis Carroll that I could find.”
Mad Hatters have started a loyalty card scheme, are offering 10% off on food to go, and have a special offer on sausage and bacon sandwiches through September. The tea rooms will be licensed in the near future, and are able to open up and cater for evening parties.
