A NEW charity is being set up in Westbury, with the aim of promoting the wellbeing of local residents and to contribute to the relief of those in need.
The new charity, “Crosspoint”, is the brainchild of a group of people from a number of churches in the town.
The first project for the charity is to set up a “welcome centre” in the town where people in need can drop in for help, advice, or simply to chat with a friendly face.
Rev Jennifer Totney, a member of the charity’s initial committee said, “Basically Crosspoint is a new organisation that is being set up by a group of people from different churches in the town. We recognise the problems of social isolation and deprivation in our area.
“It was a feeling that there are needs in our local community, and there are people who aren’t confident in accessing services that are seen to be official. The churches feel that they want to care for local people, but people don’t always come to the church to be helped.
“The specific project we’re trying to get going is a welcome centre and we’re trying to find a premises we can rent and have open as a drop-in centre for people to come and have a chat, and have signposting to other organisations if they have more specific needs. We’re at the point of exploring possible premises and funds and we’re applying for grants at the moment, but obviously that will take time to come through.”
The charity will be built on Christian values, seeking to promote the wellbeing of local people and contributing to the relief of those in need, irrespective of age, gender, sexual orientation, disability, race, or religion.
For those who wish to get involved, meetings to discuss the charity’s aims and ambitions will be held on Thursday 11th November at Westbury Infants School at 7.00pm for 7.30pm, and on Friday 12th November at The Garden House Hotel, 12.30 for 1.00pm.
