WESTBURY Lions celebrated their 45th Charter night at the White Horse Country Park, where Lion president Angie Fawcett and her husband Rob were commended for their lifetime of working in the care industry.
Joining the president at the top table this year were newly-elected Mayor of Westbury Ian Cunningham and his wife Julie, district governor Peter and his wife Lion Debbie and 1st vice district governor and fellow Westbury Lion Jarvis and his wife Heather.
Nigel Coward, Westbury Lion’s vice-president reports, “After a wonderful three-course meal, speeches were delivered and awards presented, with notable recipients including Lion Jaki Steven receiving the President’s Cup, and Lion Michelle Strout and Leo President Megan Cox receiving Outstanding Service Awards for their work in the community this year.
“The Lions bookshop committee were also honoured collectively for their work in developing the club bookshop into what has become a busy and very popular venue within the community, with special mention being made of their amazing efforts in moving the shop from Warminster Road to Edward Street in just three weeks!
“Two Melvyn Jones Fellowship Awards were also presented this year, to Lions Horace Prickett and myself. This honour is given by the Lions Clubs International Foundation in recognition of outstanding service and dedication by members and is much cherished by its recipients. Incidentally, it was Horace who introduced myself to Westbury Lions Club, so it seemed fitting that we received our honours together.
“As always, this year’s Charter Night was well attended by our fellow Lions from around the district, with the usual suspects from Trowbridge, Bradford on Avon, Frome, GMS, Warminster and Newbury in attendance.
“Despite the best efforts of Trowbridge Lions to hold the Westbury Charter to random, eagle-eyed Lion Terry was on hand to prevent trouble developing.
“Entertainment this year was provided by Big Mammas Banned, with singer Claire Perry keeping the dance floor busy for all throughout the night as she blasted out hits from across the years.”
Lions’ president Angie Fawcett said, “The evening was just amazing and we were able to celebrate a year of volunteering and social events. Everyone had a great time and enjoyed good food and music.
“The Lions work incredibly hard for the local community, both in front and behind closed doors, with most of the money raised being returned back to Westbury.
“I am amazed, as president, of the incredible work that goes into the club, and what a great benefit for the community everyone a part of it is.”
