ROCK legends ‘Status Quo’ are the latest in the long list of names to support a group of Westbury walkers who will be taking part in a 117 mile long fundraising walk.
Status Quo, who had a string of hits in the 1970s and early 80s with hits such as and Rockin’ All Over The World’ and ‘Whatever You Want’ are continuing to perform throughout the world. The band have signed a guitar which will be raffled in aid of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Bath’s Royal United Hospital.
Westbury postman and singer/songwriter Leander Morales will be leading the band of wandering trouba-dours – Lee Walford, Andrew Hill and Al O’Kane – from Westbury to London by foot. The group will depart on Saturday August 21st, walking to Devizes where they will play the first of seven gigs at the Bell by the Green.
Then, via Pewsey, Hungerford, Woolhampton, and Reading, the group will eventually rest their weary feet in the shadow of Nelson’s Column before playing the final show of the “Walking for Sunshine Tour.”
The guitar, signed by the ‘Quo, was donated by Westbury Music shop, All Instruments. Assistant manager Henry Appleby said, “We were really happy to get involved because it’s a great local cause. When Leander asked, we told him ‘you can have whatever you want’. I can’t believe they’re walking so far: next they’ll be rocking all over the world!”
Leander’s fundraising campaign has been snowballing of late and his online ‘JustGiving’ page has already netted over £1,000.
“I even had somebody anonymously post a £20 cheque through my door the other day. I never thought people would support this so much, it’s really great to see,” said Leander, whose daughter, Alana was born at the RUH nearly 10 weeks premature back in 2004.
Leander said, “I’m doing this as I would like to contribute to the Space to Grow campaign. My daughter spent the first seven weeks of her life in the unit. I feel the least I can do is donate my time to help raise vital funds to build the new NICU in Bath. I’m honoured that my friends should join me on this particular tour, as it will be challenging!”
