WESTBURY has a new mayor, cllr David Windess.
Cllr Windess, who has spent the last year serving as deputy mayor, was elected as the new mayor at the Annual Town Council meeting on Wednesday 4th May. Cllr Sue Ezra has been appointed as his deputy.
Cllr Windess, a councillor for the Ham Ward, has lived in Westbury on and off for 38 years, with time away while in the Royal Engineers. He has been a town councillor for the past four years and says he hopes to follow in the footsteps of the town’s previous mayors by doing his best for the town.
“I am pleased to be given the opportunity to represent Westbury as mayor and would like to thank the people of Westbury for giving me this chance,” he said. “I will carry out the mayoral duties to the very best of my abilities.
“The things that are important to me are the same as every other resident of Westbury, I want it to be a safe and thriving place to live. I know that in the current financial climate both people and businesses alike are struggling to survive and I will do my best to promote the town as all the previous mayors have done in the past. l work alongside fellow councillors to protect our services and facilities as they are all committed and dedicated to doing their best for the town as I am, as well as getting best value for our money.”
Retiring mayor, cllr Christine Mitchell said, “I have had a marvellous year as mayor and would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their kindness and support. I have attended well over 60 engagements (not including town council meetings) and have thoroughly enjoyed them all.
“The people I have met have been lovely and have made all my engagements and my year very enjoyable, so it is very hard to pick out the highlights of the year, but I would have to say it was going with members of the Rotary Club and children of the infant schools to plant purple crocuses to celebrate “Purple Pinky Day” at Soisy Gardens; judging the Christmas card competition as all the cards made by the children were wonderful and it was very difficult to choose just one from each age group, and the Summer Street Fayre and Christmas in Westbury events.
“Cllr David Windess is a very hard working councillor and I am sure he will enjoy his year as mayor.”
