CHRISTMAS festivities will continue in full swing this Saturday, 10th December, with Westbury’s popular ‘Street Event Day’. This follows on from the hugely successful switching on of the town’s Christmas lights event, which drew hundreds of people into the High Street on Friday 25th November.
Saturday’s ‘Street Event Day will take place in the town centre, from the High Street through to the Market Place, and will include a skating rink, reindeer, fairground rides, inflatables and music and entertainment between 10.00am and 4.00pm.
This year there will also be some 20 stalls in an Artisans’ Christmas Market, held in the Market Place and Edward Street, offering tempting festive treats from crafts and Christmas gifts to food and drink.
Organisers hope that the town will continue to support events in the “Christmas in Westbury” programme, bringing lots more Christmas spirit to the town.
At the switching on of Westbury’s Christmas lights, stalls, fairground rides and entertainment were enjoyed around the town centre while a programme got under way on the High Street stage.
Mayor of Westbury, cllr David Windess, introduced the evening’s celebrations including festive favourites by Westbury Junior School’s ukulele group. Excitement mounted as Father Christmas appeared on the Westbury Lion’s float, before making his way through the High Street, greeting children who received sweets from his trusty elves.
The winners of the fancy dress competition and the winners of the Christmas card competition were announced during the evening and invited to join Father Christmas, town mayor cllr David Windess, and town crier Sean Price on stage. Finally, it was five-year-old Be-Be who was delighted to be chosen to push the button and switch on the Christmas lights.
Westbury Mayor cllr David Windess said he was pleased with the turn-out of such an enjoyable event. “It was good to see so many people at the lights switch on. I thought the fancy dress competition winners and the ukulele group were fantastic, and I hope the people of Westbury enjoyed the evening!”
And there’s plenty more in store as Westbury has lots more festive highlights coming up throughout the coming weeks which include:
