Volunteers at the Westbury Museum welcomed a visit from local MP Andrew Murrison recently.
The MP attended the museum to see its latest exhibits and to meet some of the volunteers.
“He enjoyed his visit and was especially interested in the commemorative shield of the ship HMS Aphis,” said Liz Argent, chairperson of Westbury Heritage Society.
“I explained that the ship had been adopted by Westbury during the war, and townspeople had received the plaque as a thank you.”
The ship was a Royal Navy Insect-class gunboat, launched in 1915 and scrapped in 1946. One of her operations during World War II saw her taking part in landings in the south of France under the US command of Lieutenant Commander Douglas Fairbanks Jr., who later had a career in Hollywood as an actor and producer.
Westbury Museum is staffed entirely by volunteers, and new volunteers are always welcome. Visit www.westburyheritagesociety.org.uk or the museum for more details.
