An additional CCTV camera will be installed in Westbury’s town centre in a bid to reduce crime.
It will be stationed on Haynes Road and oversee activity on the High Street.
Westbury Town Council’s Policy and Resources committee discussed the potential need for CCTV in their most recent meeting.
In a statement, the committee said, “Our members have expressed serious concern about recent vandalism to public assets in the town centre, including incidents of graffiti and damage to facilities such as the bus shelter, public toilets, bins, and planters.
“The installation of this additional CCTV camera will give the control room full visibility of the High Street and the entrance to the car park.
“This enhanced coverage will help us respond swiftly to incidents of fly-tipping and other forms of anti-social behaviour, ensuring our town remains clean, safe, and welcoming for everyone.”
It will cost up to £3,500 to install the camera, the town council documents state.
The camera will be overseen by the Warminster and Westbury CCTV partnership which is run by a working group of representatives from Warminster Town Council, Westbury Town Council, Wiltshire Council, the Army, Wiltshire Police, West Wilts Trading Estate and local businesses.
Cameras utilise advanced four-lensed, 360-degree technology, covering a wide area and displaying 56 images.
The surveillance network, which was upgraded in 2023 with new wireless high-definition cameras, has played a key role in deterring crime and assisting the police with investigations.
Mark Chalmers, supervisor of the CCTV team, said, “The new camera is to cover the Haynes Road side of the High Street. This will help us support the charity shops in that area which have been getting a lot of fly tipping outside the shops.”
