THE Mayor and mayoress of Westbury officially opened a new sensory room at Greengates Care Home on Saturday 5th December.
Sarah Winchester, home manager said, “The sensory room was built with help from a large amount of fundraising events and the generosity of staff, friends, relatives and residents past and present.
“The sensory room will enhance the lives of our residents by providing them with a comforting environment in which they can have soothing lighting and music and different fabrics as a form of therapy.
“It has been proven to work well with those who have dementia when they may be feeling agitated or just want somewhere quiet to sit. It can be used as a group activity or one-to-one time with a member of the staff team; the sensory room is accessible for all of our residents.
“We had the idea of a sensory room from reading different literature relating to dementia and improving their quality of life and therefore we decided to commence the fundraising in order to achieve this.
“We are truly overwhelmed by the support that we have received. MRM Property Services Ltd were wonderful and also donated time and materials in order to build our sensory room.
“A huge thank you to everyone involved as we now have a sensory room for residents to enjoy for now and years to come.
Mayor of Westbury, cllr David Bradshaw said, “I had the pleasure to be asked to open the new sensory room at Greengates Care Home which was funded by events, generous donations and the work of local businessman Daniel Stone. This therapeutic room is most impressive and will benefit many people.
“The staff gave me a warm welcome and they were caring, pleasant and helpful towards the residents who all appeared to be content, comfortable and happy, which was a pleasure to see. They also have a full programme of special Christmas events planned for them.
“The home is a credit to the home manager Sarah Winchester and her staff.”
