LIBERAL Democrats hold the Westbury North seat as Carole King is elected as the new Wiltshire councillor, following the resignation of David Jenkins.
A by-election was held on Thursday 18th July between five candidates to fill the empty North Ward seat. The full results were: Ian Cunningham (Independent) 231 votes, Carole King (Liberal Democrat) 488 votes, Francis Moorland (Independent) 16 votes, Antonio Piazza (Conservatives) 140 votes and Jane Russ (Labour) 57 votes.
On winning the election, Carole King said, “I would like to say a huge thank you to the voters on the 18th of July for their confidence in electing me to the vacant Wiltshire Council seat in Westbury North.
“It is a great honour which I appreciate almost beyond words. I promise to be a councillor for everyone whether you voted for me or not and to work hard on all of your behalf.
“I realise from speaking to so many of you on your doorstep that it was always going to be a hard decision as so many of you, like me, are so despondent with the national political situation.
“By voting for me you demonstrated local politics still matter. So, if like me you want to see real improvements in Westbury, then may I suggest that you contact the town clerk and get involved with your local Neighbourhood Plan or the newly-formed Shopkeepers Forum.
“Or contact the headteacher of Westbury Junior School to get involved with the exciting hub project to transform the old youth centre. You could contact Sovereign Housing to join POPCAN, a neighbourhood engagement project or help in the fight against the granting of an environment permit for the Gasification Plant at Northacre Park or come to your community area board.
“My contact details will soon be on the Wiltshire Council website; my council email address is carole.king@wiltshire.gov.uk.”
