TOWN councillors concluded there was no problem with visibility at a Westbury roundabout despite local concern that “something needs to be done”.
Westbury’s highways, planning and development committee decided not to refer the request regarding Primmer’s Place to Wiltshire Council’s community and transport group for consideration, at their latest meeting.
A resident wrote to the council saying, “I’m raising concern about coming out of Primmer’s Place, Westbury. When approaching the roundabout you cannot see traffic on the left until they come out in front of you.
“When coming out of Primmer’s Place you cannot see traffic coming from the right on the roundabout, so it’s potluck and more than likely traffic is coming, but neither of us can see.
“It is a very dangerous roundabout not being able to see. I use this roundabout every day Monday to Saturday. Could we please have traffic lights or something done about this?”
But cllr Ward Jones said, “I don’t agree with this request – I traverse the roundabout regularly – more than once a day, more or less every day. I don’t think it’s a problem.”
Agreeing, cllr Mike Sutton said, “I use this road very frequently. If there’s a problem it’s that people coming down the hill don’t observe the white lines, they just carry on across, but that’s road etiquette more than a danger. Having used this road for years, building the roundabout at Spinnaker Place has actually increased the visibility.”
Cllr Jones added, “If we were going to have traffic lights here we would have to have traffic lights at the Slag Lane junction, which is much more dangerous.
“The roundabout there is not so obvious – it’s a little circle down on the road.”
