A Westbury woman and her dog are hard at work preparing for the World Agility Championships in Switzerland this June.
Claire Barton and her four-year-old cocker spaniel Woody, who will represent Great Britain at the event, have been busy training and competing to get ready for the international challenge.
Claire, who has been involved in dog agility for nearly ten years with her three dogs, said, “My youngest dog, Woody, is the one I am competing with in Switzerland and I am super proud.
“We’ve worked so hard to achieve this and being chosen for Team GB was just a ‘wow’ moment. I know the competition is going to be super tough with us up against other nations, but it’s also going to be a great experience. Nerves will kick in I’m sure, but I want to enjoy every minute.”
In preparation, Claire and Woody are taking part in regular competitions as the agility season gets underway, helping to sharpen their skills ahead of the big event. They are also attending training sessions with their regular trainer and will soon join a special Team GB meeting to meet their teammates and train together.
Claire, who went to Matravers School, and Woody will compete in the ‘400 midi height’ category, which sees dogs jump 40cm hurdles and tackle obstacles such as tunnels and weave poles.
The World Agility Championships, running from 16th to 22nd June, is self-funded for competitors. Claire has set up a GoFundMe page to help cover the costs of travel, accommodation, kit and essential vaccinations for Woody.
