WESTBURY’S quakers’ graveyard will be celebrated by the North East Somerset Quakers on Saturday 20th July with a special plaque, thanking the Leos and Lions for finding and restoring the burial site.
The historic burial ground, located behind Pinniger Finch & Co, has been completely restored by members of the Westbury Leos and Lions, with the help of archaeologist Julian Richards.
During the restoration, they found 14 graves, together with two top sited gravestones, one of which denoted the grave of William Matravers, who on his death in 1804, bequeathed £1,000 to fund a school for the children of Westbury, still known today as Matravers School.
There will be an unveiling of a commemorative plaque at the graveyard on Saturday 20th July at 10.30am. All are welcome to join.
