STAFF at Morrisons on Edward Street last month joined a regional fundraising event “Round the World Cycle Challenge.”
Store colleagues combined forces to cycle 15 minutes each on an exercise bike in the store. The Westbury store’s chosen destination was France, and the staff cycled a grand total of 472 miles – equal to a journey there and back – over the course of two days. The event also took on a French theme, with fancy dress and decorations.
Their efforts raised £1,277 from sponsorship and collection.
Organiser Lorraine Lewis said, “The weekend went extremely well. It was hard work – I stood collecting money for nearly nine hours and the only time I could sit down was my turn on the bike! But it was for a great cause and well worth it.
“All members of staff thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and couldn’t wait to hear what we’re planning next. We hope to make this a regular thing, and maybe do a treadmill or rowing machine challenge next.
“I’d like to say a huge thanks to the staff and all our customers who made it so worthwhile.”
The challenge was completed on a static exercise bike donated by Westbury’s Dynamik Bodyz fitness club.
The money raised from the event will go to Morrisons’ charity of the year Sue Ryder, for whom the chain raised £127,000 in August.
Staff at other 113 Morrisons stores across the South West also took part in the challenge to cycle a combined 24,902 miles; the circumference of the Earth.
