Devizes 2nds were proud of their unbeaten home record, but in today’s match, Westbury were to bring that to an end with a 6 try demolition of the home side.
Although once again, Westbury were a little slow to move up through the gears to get going, and indeed offered Devizes the chance to open the scoring with an early penalty. Unfortunately the kick was to be off target. 9 minutes into the match Westbury were given the chance to open the scoring when Devizes were caught offside. Westbury captain Aaron Vaughan duly kicked the 3 points.
Within 5 minutes, Devizes were able to draw level when Westbury were guilty of the same offence of being offside. 3 points each and Westbury, who were slowly starting to take control of the match, won another penalty after a scrum, when the Devizes front row stood up under the pressure from the Westbury front row of Michael Tuck, Jack Bates and Chris Pearce.
With the match swinging Westbury’s way, full back Sam McQueen opened his account with a superb try which came from a driving maul that was driven into the Devizes half, and with a brilliant run from centre, Dan Heatley then released Sam to touch down in the corner. Vaughan missed the conversion, but added a penalty a few minutes later. 3 – 14 to Westbury at half time.
The second half started with Westbury taking complete control and with the backs in rampant mood, led by centre Lee McClerg who was carrying the ball deep into Devizes territory, giving the defence all sorts of trouble, they were able to add tries by replacement No 8 Reece Ball, plus Sam McQueen added a brace of tries towards his hat trick. Adding to the fun, replacement winger Matt Greatly and centre Dan Heatley scored one each and ‘Ronnie’ Vaughan added a conversion.
The final score was Devizes 3 – Westbury 43. Once again, it was a very satisfactory result for all of the hard work of the coach ‘Foggy’ Vaughan and his players at their training sessions.
