A CAMPAIGN to have a road named after a former Matravers headteacher has been a success and an official sign is now in situ at Gilhespy Way.
The road name was chosen as one of ten for the new White Horse View housing estate being built near The Mead.
The name was asked for by former students and colleagues of the late Nigel Gilhespy, headteacher at Matravers School from 1986 to 2005. In memory of Nigel students and staff collected over 2,000 signatures on a petition to name a road after him.
Radek Evans, who went door-to-door collecting signatures for the petition, says the gesture is a fitting way to remember his old teacher.
Radek said, “I was so happy when I saw the sign and knew all my hard work going door-to-door collecting signatures had paid off. We had a lot of great support from local people who thought it was a good idea. It wasn’t easy making it happen but it was definitely worth it.
“People agreed with me that it would be nice to have a road named after someone who had done so much for Westbury, instead of naming it after a tree or a bird. I think it’s a great way to remember him.”
The road name was chosen by developer Barratt Homes after being put forward by Westbury Town Council. Building on the new estate of over 200 homes has been under way since last year.
