With NHS earwax removal services becoming increasingly hard to access, more people are turning to private providers for help. However, when it comes to your hearing health, it’s important to choose the right provider.
Unfortunately, the earwax removal profession is largely unregulated, meaning some providers are offering services without the necessary qualifications or experience. In fact, many have simply completed short one or two-day courses. The ear canal and eardrum are highly sensitive, and improper removal of earwax can lead to serious complications, including infections, hearing loss, or even permanent damage.
Here are the key things to look for when choosing an earwax removal provider:
Relevant qualifications – Ensure the practitioner has formal healthcare or audiology training, not just a basic, short course.
Experience with ears – It’s essential that the provider has hands-on experience working with real patients, not just training on manikins. Look for someone who has a proven track record in performing earwax removal safely and effectively.
Understanding of ear anatomy – The provider should be able to recognise normal and abnormal conditions inside the ear, ensuring a thorough and accurate assessment before any removal is done.
Clinical environment – The procedure should be carried out in a clean, professional clinical setting. Avoid providers operating in non-medical spaces, as these are unlikely to meet the necessary hygiene and safety standards.
Audiologist back-up – It’s important that the provider either is an Audiologist or has access to one. This ensures that if any complications arise, such as signs of underlying ear conditions, they can provide appropriate follow-up care or referrals.
Avoid the cheapest option – While cost is an important consideration, a provider offering drastically lower prices may be cutting corners on quality, experience, or safety. Prioritise expertise and safety over saving a few pounds.
