Organisers have hailed Westbury’s Summer Celebration as a great success after large crowds turned out for the street fayre and evening concert.
The event, on Saturday 12th July, had something for everyone with numerous stalls as well as events taking place throughout the day including a puppet show, belly dancing, pig show, majorettes, a dog show and walkabout street acts. The evening entertainment in the Market Place included music from The Pigeons, Frome Street Bandits, Papa Legal, Lauren Medway and Abba Fever.
Westbury town clerk, Keith Harvey said, “During the day the weather was great and the large crowds gave the event a wonderful atmosphere. Besides our many local charity and food stalls we also had a continental market, model railway, vintage motor bikes, street entertainers together with activities for the children. We also had a Historical Walk around Westbury which attracted 50 participants.
“In the evening Westbury had its own Glastonbury with a downpour during the music concert, however it didn’t dampen the spirits of a packed Market Place where over a thousand enjoyed music played by local artists and concluding with the tribute band ABBA Fever.
“It was great to see so many people enjoying themselves and throughout the day people were saying it was the best street fayre the council had organised and I must thank Amanda McCann and Barbara Mantle who have coordinated what has been a very successful event. We hold these events every two years and are constantly asked why we don’t hold the event annually. It would be nice, but these events take so much time to arrange and we just do not have the time and resources.
“Although the thousand or so people in the Market Place had a great time at the music concert I must thank all the local residents for their support and understanding.
“I would also like to say a big thank you on behalf of the staff and councillors to all the residents of Westbury and surrounding area for their magnificent support for the Street Fayre and evening music concert.
“Finally I would like to thank everyone for their complimentary comments and the reward for us after two years’ organising is to see families having a fun day, concluding with a free music concert.”
