THE volunteers carrying out the consultation at the Heritage Centre and Westbury Library in May spoke to around 60 people in total and would like to thank them for their ideas and suggestions for how Westbury’s history and heritage can help to improve the town for the future.
The neighbourhood planning team say, “People very much valued Westbury House, originally the home of the Lavertons, who were prominent mill owners in Westbury and is now Westbury Library. They also loved the swimming pool which is one of the oldest swimming pools in continual use in England.
“Many people appreciated the historic core of Westbury around All Saints’ Church and wished that it could be smartened up. They particularly wanted to see the Market Place improved and the occasional market taking place there. The Town Hall was mentioned as a building that could be improved. The continuing closure of The Lopes Arms was of concern and the Heritage Group are in contact with the conservation officer of Wiltshire Council about its deteriorating condition.
“It was clear that there is a great deal of sadness about the large number of empty shops around the town. Attracting new retail businesses in the current environment will be difficult, but a few key businesses that attract people into the High Street could really make a difference and increase footfall.
“If you have ideas and suggestions about how we can improve our historic buildings and spaces, please contact the neighbourhood planning team on neighbourhoodplan@west burytowncouncil.gov.uk
