A WESTBURY boy is appealing for people to help clean up Westbury for the Jubilee, and has even appeared in the Daily Mail for his efforts.
Jamie Harper, a ten-year-old pupil at Westbury Junior School, picks up rubbish on his way to and from school, and earlier this year received a young person’s civic award from the town council for his efforts in keeping Westbury clean.
The Daily Mail was so impressed to hear of Jamie’s efforts that he appeared in the national newspaper last week. He is now inviting people to get involved in the Daily Mail’s ‘Spring Clean for the Queen’ campaign, with a litter pick in Westbury on 27th May at 2.00pm, meeting in the car park at Tesco Express in Leigh Park. The campaign asks volunteers to spend 60 minutes picking litter, recognising the 60 years of service the Queen has given to the UK, and be in with the chance of winning £10,000 for the community by sending in a ‘before’ and ‘after’ photograph. Jamie said, “I thought that because I pick up litter all the time, other people could join in.”
His mother, Kath, said, “Jamie is really keen to do this. As soon as I showed him the bit in the Daily Mail about it he was really excited! The main prize is £10,000 to spend in the community. He says we need more bins – if one gets damaged they don’t put another one up. “Three of the shops are donating to the litter pick; Tesco Express in Leigh Park are giving us bin bags, the Co-op is giving us bin bags, and Lloyds Chemist is giving us disposable gloves. Matravers and Westbury Juniors are providing the litter pickers.”
