Legion member, Eddie Bridges.
WESTBURY branch of the Royal British Legion is experiencing difficulties due to lack of membership, leaving older members concerned.
Branch member Eddie Bridges said, “If this problem cannot be improved in the near future, then in all probability, the branch will have to close and this would be a great shame. As an older branch member, I am appealing to all people who have the aims of the Legion at heart to consider joining this highly-esteemed charity.
“We fully understand that people have family and work commitments and therefore their spare time and energy is limited. However, the possibility of giving an hour or so of time occasionally would be of great assistance. People with administration, book-keeping and organising skills would be welcomed with open arms.
“As previously said, membership is open to all people who agree with our aims of helping individuals who are serving, or have served and their families who may be in need of help. Therefore, Westbury branch is mostly, the first point of contact in such cases for this area.
“The branch has operated in two phases. It was first formed in 1921 at the inception of the Royal British Legion, but unfortunately closed in 1963. It was then reformed in 1981 and is still in existence today.
“This is not a 24/7 commitment, but something that we ask people to give what they are capable of to help those who are serving and have served this country so well.
“Please give this appeal serious consideration and if you wish to speak further, please contact Eddie Bridges on 01373 823316, Bill Prior on 01373 827655 or Colin Gladesell on 01373 822006.
“Currently the branch meets on a quarterly basis at The Horse and Groom in Alfred Street. The next scheduled meeting will be on Monday 9th April.
“These meetings are normally on the first Monday of each month except on Bank Holidays.”
