THE Westbury Family History Group will welcome Roger Newman, who will be giving a talk entitled ‘D Day to the West Wilts Trading Estate’ on Thursday 22nd May.
Lynne Vercoe of the group said, “Residents of Westbury will all be familiar with the West Wilts Trading Estate, but how many of us know its origins and how it came into being.
“Roger’s talk will tell us why there was a need to build on that site, the opposition to it and how it was constructed by the Royal Engineers.
“We will learn of the involvement of the American Army. In 1947 it became the Westbury Ordinance Supply Depot. Between 1957 and 1963 it lay dormant until a forward thinking business man purchased the site and it began its life as a trading estate.
“Why not come along and find out more.”
The Westbury Family History Group meets every 4th Thursday of the month at 7.15pm in the foyer of the Westbury’s Methodist Church.
The branch has regular interesting and informative talks and discussions by members and guest speakers on all aspects of family history and general history, and welcomes anyone wishing to start their research but do not know where to begin.
