Westbury Choral Society celebrated 100 years of singing in harmony with a concert at All Saints Church on Saturday 10th May.
Soloists, musicians and musical director Luke Pickett were praised for delivering one of the group’s finest performances, with the church resounding to two major choral pieces – one new, and one historic.
The new work, Their Voices Rose, was a collaboration between Westbury author Judith Nichols and local composer Malcolm Archer.
Speaking after the event, committee member Jane Lever said, “This went down very well with both singers and audience alike and both Judith and Malcolm were in the audience, which was greatly appreciated.
“Haydn’s Creation is always popular but actually quite difficult to sing. It was chosen as it had been the first piece sung in 1925 by the newly formed Westbury & District Choral Society!
“Nevertheless the choral society did a very good job, ably assisted by a few kind friends from other local choirs who helped swell our numbers in the chorus.
“The professional soloists and musicians sang and performed very well, congratulations to all.”
Westbury Choral thanked everyone who contributed to the event, including volunteers who served refreshments, ran the raffle, and decorated the church.
Special thanks were extended to All Saints Church, rehearsal accompanist Ed Cooke, and Westbury Town Council for sponsoring the event.
The concert also marked the final performance under musical director Luke Pickett, who is stepping down after 14 years. Jane said, “You have been a skilled, dedicated and patient leader Luke, and we are all sad to see you go.”
Rehearsals resume in September, and the society welcomes both returning and new members – no audition required.
