#EveryDayIsAnOpenDayAtWLPS has been the theme throughout this year.
We started the New Year by inviting all parents/carers into school for an amazing river walk art display. Our farm, garden and forest school areas are under development and we have been fund raising via www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding /westbury-leigh-primary-school
Our dance club performed with flair and 80s gusto at Bath Forum, proudly representing WLPS dancing to Queen’s anthem ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’.
The amazing children’s author Maz Evans visited in March and brought storytelling to life in workshops with children. It was a huge inspiration for children to understand what it means to be a writer!
Our Mother’s and Father’s Day celebration lunches were hugely popular, with family members joining us to eat together and the opportunity to enjoy some time playing outside in the sun.
In April, parents took part in lessons in our Super School Review. Over the summer term all children took part in creating artwork for our new school houses; Fire, Water, Metal, Earth and Air. The children designed the boards and then, with the help of a local artist, created large art works.
We had perfect weather for our sports day in June, the WLPS family celebrated with a huge picnic and everyone enjoying the teachers’ race at the end!
Y4 had an exciting time at Grittleton House, their residential involved a range of thrilling and adventurous activities, with Year 6 enjoying their trip in October at Osmington Bay. Residential trips are a great way for children to develop their independence and team working. There is no better advert for it than seeing the children’s excited faces and hearing their adventurous tales.
At the end of the summer we said ‘goodbye’ to our responsible and courageous Year 6s. For them the end of term was fun filled with an awesome Oscar-themed party thrown by our Friends of Westbury Leigh Primary School and a tearful final assembly.
The start of the academic year saw a new curriculum designed to give children a range of experiences and learning that is relevant to their locality, heritage and wider global identity. We also reviewed our vision as a CE school, our ethos is central to all our work and it is what makes us unique. Our vision is about children being at the heart of the school and having a voice.
The children really understand our core values of respect, responsibility and courage and can talk at length about how these influence the choices they make. Courage is a strong feature and the children talk about using this a lot in their learning, which is great. Having the courage to try new things, to be able to bounce back from mistakes and the courage to speak up are all important skills.
In October we celebrated Harvest and used this time to think about Fairtrade. Year 2 led a lovely Harvest Festival at Holy Saviour Church.
Service children and the collective worship team led our school remembrance service; the children made some amazing poppy pictures as part of their reflection on remembrance.
The final few weeks of term are full of performances from Nativity, Penguin Performance, Christingle Service, Carol concert and our whole school Christmas lunch where we all come together.
Happy New Year from us all at WLPS.
