WESTBURY Lions and Leos took to the streets of Westbury earlier this month to tidy the town ahead of Remembrance Sunday.
The Leos – the junior section of the Lions Club, based at Matravers School – also cleaned the town’s war memorial.
Lion Doreen Pearce said, “It was a jolly good morning but I’m afraid we did pick up quite a lot of litter, but with all the cut backs there’s no-one to pick up the litter. If only more people took more pride in the town and didn’t drop the litter in the first place, we wouldn’t have to do it.
“Saying that, it was nice for the Lions and Leos to do something together and several members of the public did come up and thank us.”
Lion Mike Pearce added, “The Leos cleaned for the Queen in the town in May and said they would like to do two litter picks every year to keep the town looking its best.
“We were delighted with the turnout and everyone seemed to have a good time – maybe that was because of the free biscuits on offer!”
Headteacher Dr Simon Riding said, “Matravers School is delighted to be one of a very small number of schools in the country to be linked to the excellent Leos clubs. We have established great links with the Westbury Lions and are grateful for all their tireless work.
“Our Leos are able to demonstrate their excellent community spirit and character through engaging in many local activities, placing our school at the heart of the Westbury community.”
