Westbury Lions Club celebrated the 53rd anniversary of its Charter with a black tie dinner and dance on Saturday 16th May.
The Annual Charter Night – a celebration of the founding of the club in 1973 – saw club President Angie Fawcett welcome members and guests to Leigh Park Community Centre.
The guests included Lions District Governor Chris Speed from Great Yarmouth, Linda and Aidan Bell from Erlestoke Golf Club who have fundraised for the Lions over the past year and White Horse News owners Susan and Ian Drew.
Angie outlined the some of the highlights of the Lions’ year and paid tribute to the work the Lions members do for the local community.
“Wow…what a year we have had!” she said. “This year we have certainly put the fun into fundraising and delivered service with a smile!
“I continue to be amazed at the amount of work that goes on behind the scenes, the constant and devoted work of all our Lions to ensure that things happen. The community only gets to see the tip of the volunteering iceberg.”
Amongst the highlights, she said, were the 10k run in October, the Santa Float, two quiz nights, the Donkey Derby, the club’s first Prostate Screening programme which was attended by around 120 men in September, an Easter egg hunt and the Senior Citizens Party which was enjoyed by over 90 older people, with live music and afternoon tea provided by members.
Other highlights included support for the Young Musician of the Year Concert at Matravers School – something the club has done for over 45 years – and the work done in the community by the Leos, the youth division of the club.
She thanked Linda and Aidan Bell from Erlestoke Golf Club whose club captain Dennis Blackley nominated the Lions as his nominated charity for the year.
The evening concluded with dancing to The Red Bandits.
