WESTBURY could be closer than it thinks to an encounter of the third kind, as the Wiltshire Downs has been named the fourth best place to spot UFOs in Britain.
Wanderlust travel magazine published the list to celebrate the announcement that Falkirk in Scotland was the UFO capital of the world.
The entry for the Wiltshire Downs reads, “The tiny town of Warminster in Wiltshire is constantly abuzz with mysterious noises, intriguing balls of light and odd shadows in the sky and you’ll often find UFO-spotters up on Cradle Hill hoping to catch a glimpse of alien activity.
“The Wiltshire Downs are also a hotspot for crop circles, the stunning, geometrical patterns left in fields that many believe are coded messages from alien civilisations.
“Indeed, the circles are so common here that there is a code of conduct for visitors – always ask for permission when entering private property, close gates after passing through them and, where possible, use the ‘tramlines’ (path cleared by farmers to the circles) to avoid damaging standing crops.”
Warminster is no stranger to the supernatural; Cley Hill and Cradle Hill became popular skywatching spots after alleged sightings in the 1960s.
According to a website called ‘Weird Wiltshire’ believers have dimissed suggestions that UFOs could be military aircraft, and instead say that military operations on Salisbury Plain are what attract the extraterrestrial visitors.
In light of NASA’s announcement last week that there is water on Mars, perhaps more people will be keeping a weather eye on the night sky.
