AFTER months of planning and preparation, the Westbury to Everest team have begun their three-week expedition in the Himalayas.
The team of 28 hikers left Westbury on 7th March for an ‘experience of a lifetime’ trip to Nepal to trek to a base camp on Mount Everest.
In the months before the trip, the team had been fundraising for the charity Maiti Nepal which helps women and children that have been affected by the human trafficking trade.
The group also collected sponsorship from local businesses which has been used to help rebuild the area after it was hit by an earthquake in 2015. The team will also deliver letters written by children from Westbury Leigh Primary School to the children in the local school. They hope to bring back replies for the children and to continue to keep in touch in the future.
Speaking before they boarded the coach, Tom Solman, who helped organise the trip said, “Everyone is feeling quite anxious but excited. I think it’s crept up on us but we’re ready for the adventure.
“The last few days we’ve been busy getting the final bits together; Rab and I went to London a couple of days ago to pick up all 28 visas which made it feel very real!
“It’s nice to see so many of our friends and family here to see us off – their support has been great.”
