Revd Rebecca Harris, the new team rector for the White Horse Benefice was licensed by the Bishop of Salisbury, the Right Revd Nick Holtam on the evening of Wednesday 5th February.
Over 200 people gathered to welcome her to Westbury and the White Horse Team which covers the communities of Westbury, Westbury Leigh, Dilton Marsh and Brokerswood.
The service used symbols of water, the bible and keys to reflect the responsibilities and roles of the new rector. Many people from the team took part in the service. The Mayor and Mayoress of Westbury, the Revd Ian McManus of the West End Baptist Church and members of the Mothers’ Union of Westbury and Dilton Marsh were among the members of the community who formally welcomed Rebecca as part of the service.
There were over 20 clergy from across the diocese in attendance, as well as clergy from other churches in the area.
Rebecca was joined by her husband Robert and two children Jonathan and Sophie who are both studying at university, and her parents. After the service the congregation enjoyed refreshments and conversation.
Beth Thomas, churchwarden of All Saints’ Church said, “It was wonderful to see so many people join us to welcome Rebecca to Westbury. So many people spoke in their words of welcome to her of what a great place Westbury is and what a wonderful community we have. The churches and congregations of the White Horse Team are a key part of the communities in which we live. I think the number of organisations that attended to be part of the service reflected that. We are looking forward to getting to know Rebecca.”
