Mayor, Cllr Ian Cunningham, officially declared the Westbury community fridge open at a special ceremony on Wednesday 20th March.
Kieran Thorburn from the Town Council, along with a handful of town councillors, one of the fridge volunteers and Graeme Morrison from Wiltshire Council attended the opening to celebrate the launch.
This is the first Community Fridge to open in Wiltshire and was all made possible by Westbury Town Council, the Waste Education Team at Wiltshire Wildlife Trust (funded by Wiltshire Council) and Crosspoint plus a dedicated team of volunteers who will keep the fridge stocked and clean.
The fridge is located in Crosspoint in Westbury Market Place and is open each week, Monday and Wednesday from 2:30 to 5pm and Thursday and Saturday from 10am to 12.30pm. It will be a lucky dip as to what’s available in the fridge, depending on what surplus food has been donated by local food businesses. Currently the fridge is grateful to the Westbury Lidl store that is a regular donor but other local businesses have shown an interest in helping out – contact Kieran if you’d like to donate food info@westbury towncouncil.gov.uk or call 01373 822 232.
Jessica Thimbleby from Wiltshire Wildlife Trust said “It’s been so exciting to be part of this great project – we’re really happy Westbury Town Council wanted to make it happen and that we found some fantastic volunteers in Westbury to run the fridge. We’re also grateful to Crosspoint for giving the fridge a home. As well as saving good food from going in the bin we hope it’ll help lots of people eat well”
