Raising money for good causes is part of the ethos of the Active Retirement Club (ARC), and a recent meeting did that in a new way.
Members were treated to an insight into a trip to Nepal undertaken by Ian Williamson on behalf of St Margaret’s Hospice in Taunton.
Ian trekked through the foothills of Nepal with a mixed party led by Nepalese guides, and found that the country is still recovering from the massive earthquake of 2015. After the trek he stayed on to help build a house for a family who were living in the only building left standing on their farm, an animal shed. Ian raises money for the hospice through giving such talks, and in addition to his speaker’s fee, ARC members contributed to a collection.
Since then, there has been a quarterly lunch at the White Horse Country Club, where a charity raffle was held. A fascinating presentation by Tony Coutts-Britton, a regular lecturer on cruise ships, was given on the strategy of D-Day, at another meeting in the URC Hall. Members are also looking forward to a skittles match and pub lunch at the Horse and Groom. ARC members certainly like variety!
