Westbury Leigh C of E Primary School now has its own school farm on site called Shearwater Farm. The school is asking for community volunteers to help develop the farm into an even better learning experience.
Naomi Lawrence of the primary school said, “The wonderful farm was established in late 2016 by a dedicated team of staff with the help of some fantastic parents. Our school farm is a great learning tool for all pupils; the direct hands-on learning can help students develop their skills at the same time as experiencing the natural world around them.
“Our farm is currently the home to four chickens, four ducks, two guinea pigs and two rabbits. The chickens have become very friendly and now love to be stroked and the guinea pigs are a huge hit – although shy at first, they now love to be stroked and cuddled! Our rabbits are very mischievous, especially Oreo! Our ducks are the newest addition to our farm but have settled in fantastically and definitely like to make themselves heard.
“It has been fantastic to see how the pupils have responded to this unique learning experience. Children volunteer to feed and water the animals, as well as giving them daily cuddles!
“We now want to focus on providing a more substantive home for our animals and we are looking for some willing community volunteers to provide materials or skills in order to create a fantastic outdoor learning environment. We desperately need a pond to be excavated and a sturdy fence, so our animals can roam safely.”
