WESTBURY Lions’ ninth annual Donkey Derby took place on Sunday, bringing all the excitement of race day to the White Horse Country Park.
Large crowds cheered on the young jockeys and had a flutter on the eight donkey derby races and enjoyed a wide range of other attractions including donkey rides for the younger children, a funfair and bouncy castle, mini railway, coconut shy and lots of stalls provided by local charities and businesses.
“Wow, could this have been our best Donkey Derby ever?” said president Nigel Coward. “Thank you to everyone who came along and who made it such a special day for us! It was a fantastic event and really well supported by the Westbury community, as always.
“We were a bit worried on the Saturday because of the weather but fortunately, it started dry and a really good crowd turned up and seemed to enjoy themselves. The donkey derby is one of the biggest fundraisers on our calendar and all the money raised will be used in our community, via donations to schools, individuals in need, local charities and community groups, so your support WILL make a difference to someone you probably know!
“Special thanks to Mayor Christine Mitchell for opening the event, Westbury ATC for looking after the parking, Trowbridge Lions Club for providing additional manpower, White Horse Country Park for providing a superb venue and of course Garston Veterinary Group for their generous sponsorship.
“Also big thanks to the Horse and Groom who delivered a first class meal for our hungry lions after the event!
