Issue 449 – Town traffic trouble high on area board agenda

Westbury’s traffic problems will be high on the agenda when the community area board meets on Thursday December 10th.

Wiltshire Council service director Alan Feist will be talking about the future of traffic in Westbury and will also be updating the meeting on the progress of other highways projects like the Maristow Street – rotunda improvements project and the proposed pedestrian crossing on Warminster Road by Green Lane.
“The area board is where anyone from the town and the villages can get the chance to discuss local issues that concern them and receive answers from relevant council officers. Since the news that the bypass will not be happening, local people have grown increasingly concerned about traffic issues and our list of current issues for us to tackle fully reflects this focus on roads,” said area board chairman Russell Hawker.
The meeting at Matravers School will also hear from a group of young people who have been carrying out surveys in the villages around Westbury to find out about transport needs from teenagers.
The packed agenda will also hear about the latest work being done to tackle the problems of noise and anti- social behaviour following late night drinking around the Market Place area. The area board has been working together with the police, licensees, local residents, licensing officers and the council’s community safety team.
The details of grants approved by the area board for local projects will also be announced.
“It promises to be an interesting meeting with a whole range of local issues to interest local people. Everyone is very welcome to attend.” said cllr Hawker.
The Westbury area board, which is one of 18 across the county, was set up as part of the new unitary Wiltshire Council. It covers Westbury and the villages of Bratton, Coulston, Dilton Marsh, Edington and Heywood.
Four local councillors, who represent the area, make up the board. They are Russell Hawker (Westbury West), David Jenkins (Westbury North), Mike Cuthbert-Murray (Westbury East) and Julie Swabey (Ethandune)
The meeting on Thursday December 10th starts at 7.00pm but from 6.30pm refreshments will be served and people attending the meeting get the opportunity for informal chats with their councillors as well as partner organisations like the police.
For more information about the meeting please contact community area manager Sally Hendry on 01373 864714 or email her at sally.hendry@ wiltshire.gov.uk .
