A PUBLIC meeting will be held next week by the group leading the campaign to protect Westbury’s swimming pool.
The meeting of Save Westbury’s Pool will take place at the Laverton on Thursday 8th April at 7.00pm.
The meeting will include updates on the progress of the group’s steps to list the building with English Heritage, and discuss how best to take forward the campaign to preserve one of the oldest swimming pools in the country.
Wiltshire councillor Mike Cuthbert-Murray, who represents Westbury East and sits on the Save Westbury Pool committee said, “This is a chance for anybody who has an interest in keeping Westbury’s pool open to come down and have their say on what should be done.
“We’ve had hundreds of people sign the petition to preserve the pool and 1,400 people have joined the Facebook group, which just goes to show the people of Westbury want to protect this valuable community resource. I hope as many people as possible will come down on the evening.”
The campaign to save the pool began after the White Horse News revealed that Wiltshire Council had identified an “over-provision” of swimming pools in the west Wiltshire area of the county. It is currently undertaking an audit of all the leisure facilities in the county.
The council has played down fears that Westbury’s pool could close, saying that no such decision would be made until after the audit and extensive public consultation.
Cllr Cuthbert-Murray added that the popularity of the Save Westbury’s Pool campaign could serve as Wiltshire Council’s consultation in the town. The campaign has received support from Westbury’s MP, Dr Andrew Murrison, The Victorian Society, Westbury Town Council, and Westbury Area Board.
