WESTBURY’S MP, Andrew Murrison, has celebrated being a local representative in Parliament for the past 10 years.
In September 2000 he was a surgeon commander in the Royal Navy but had to leave the service when he was selected as the Conservative candidate for the then Westbury constituency.
In the general election of Thursday 11th June 2001 he was elected MP for Westbury, covering Trowbridge, Warminster, Bradford-on-Avon, Westbury and Mere and surrounding communities, as one of the few new Conservative MPs returned when Tony Blair celebrated his second landslide victory. The election that year had been delayed a month because of the foot and mouth crisis which meant farms could not be canvassed. He was re-elected for Westbury in 2005 and for the new seat of South West Wiltshire last May.
Andrew Murrison said, “It’s been a huge privilege to serve as MP for this area and I’m very lucky to have been able to make it our family home. I’m so grateful for the support I’ve received over the years. It’s been an eventful decade with two wars, a major recession and a change of government. I hope the next 10 years will be characterised by rather more peace and prosperity.”
